Might be a stretch to get Apple to approve that through the App Store… Then again, Apple would themselves (and their loyal customers) a GoodThing if they would just buy the company that does GO for GMAIL, disassemble and understand it, then redo it from the ground up to handle multiple email server types. Of course, Apple Mail can access different types of mail accounts, including iCLOUD-based email and Google-based email. My business mail is all on GMAIL, but I have a personal email with some volume on Apple Mail. I am sure the Apple Mail problems will get worked out, but I went to try GO for GMAIL because I am so frustrated with Apple Mail currently.
